Yay applesauce! This is the best thing to snack on, and so much better than store bought applesauce.
I like to make it butterscotch style**. But even without adding any sugar at all, if you use the right apples, the applesauce is still sweet and delicious. Use one apple for each person or serving.
Homemade Applesauce
4 servings
Here's what you need:
4 apples
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup milk (can use water)
1/4 cup sugar **
1/2 tsp cinnamon
large pot
sharp knife or peeler
Potato masher
Peel and core apples, then dice into small pieces. Boil apples in a large pot with the 1/2 cup water and 1/4 cup milk. You can use all water, but I like the extra creamy taste the milk gives it. Bring the apples to a boil over medium high heat. Boil for 15-20 minutes, or until soft. Remove from heat and let cool.
Add the sugar and cinnamon and stir into the soft apples. Mash the apples with a potato masher or a fork. I actually use a blender to mash it up. Because I am lazy and wouldn't want to use my arms to do any work.
Serve warm or cold, it's delicious either way!
** To make it butterscotch style, substitute brown sugar for the white sugar and serve warm over vanilla ice cream. Top with nuts, crushed graham crackers and raisins. It tastes like apple cobbler!
